I would say that it doesn't do either. It is just a story about a couple who fall in love even though she is in a loveless marriage. I think that it shows that sometimes things are more complicated than just simple right and wrong. and stuff happens that is out of our control.
Who knows how things would have turned out if any of them had survived.
